ABSTRACT
In a bid to address various socio-economic challenges, students from Technical Universities in Ghana proposed a range of cutting-edge solutions. From a Biometric Health Identification System to a solar fruit dryer, and from sustainable paper packaging to a portable renewable power generation system, these innovations aim to transform industries and improve lives. In the healthcare sector, the Biometric Health Identification System and the MedEase app seek to enhance patient identification, data management, and supply chain efficiency. Meanwhile, the PECTA Blood Warmer promises to revolutionize blood transfusion safety. In agriculture, the solar fruit dryer and the improved Plastic Film Mulch Laying Implement aim to reduce post-harvest losses and promote sustainable food production. In energy, the IoT and AI Energy Management System and the portable renewable power generation system seek to optimize energy consumption and reduce reliance on non-renewable sources. Finally, in construction, sustainable flood resilient homes and the use of plastic waste as a binding agent for producing roof and wall tiles offer innovative solutions to environmental challenges.
These pioneering projects have the potential to drive positive change in Ghana and beyond.
INTRODUCTION
Our goal is to create a highly portable, dependable, and long-lasting blood warming solution to address these issues, as hypothermia is a critical side effect of medical procedures that increases morbidity and mortality. Current blood warming techniques are hindered by their large size and reliance on electricity, posing significant challenges in resource-limited settings.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Blood transfusion responses, particularly the often-overlooked hypothermia, are widespread in Africa when patients get blood stored at low temperatures, drastically reducing their body temperature, delaying treatment and possibly leading to death. To avoid this, a device that warms blood to ideal temperatures prior to transfusion is critical for preserving proper blood function in patients.
SOLUTION
The device uses electricity, chargeable in-built battery and solar energy to warm stored blood with a minimum time of 15 minutes in air medium, providing optimal physiological temperature that prevents hypothermia and improves patient health.
MARKET VALUE
The market for a solar-powered, battery-operated, and electric blood warmer is substantial, particularly in regions with limited electricity access in Africa. Its portability and versatility make it ideal for disaster relief, military and field hospitals, and home healthcare settings, ensuring safe blood transfusions in diverse environments.
This device has strong partnership potential with NGOs and international health organizations like the WHO, Red Cross, and Médecins Sans Frontières, enhancing blood transfusion safety in resource-limited settings. Aligning with the global trend towards decentralized healthcare, it can capture a significant share of the projected $600 billion medical device market by 2025.
