ABSTRACT

In a bid to address various socio-economic challenges, students from Technical Universities in Ghana proposed a range of cutting-edge solutions. From a Biometric Health Identification System to a solar fruit dryer, and from sustainable paper packaging to a portable renewable power generation system, these innovations aim to transform industries and improve lives. In the healthcare sector, the Biometric Health Identification System and the MedEase app seek to enhance patient identification, data management, and supply chain efficiency. Meanwhile, the PECTA Blood Warmer promises to revolutionize blood transfusion safety. In agriculture, the solar fruit dryer and the improved Plastic Film Mulch Laying Implement aim to reduce post-harvest losses and promote sustainable food production. In energy, the IoT and AI Energy Management System and the portable renewable power generation system seek to optimize energy consumption and reduce reliance on non-renewable sources. Finally, in construction, sustainable flood resilient homes and the use of plastic waste as a binding agent for producing roof and wall tiles offer innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

These pioneering projects have the potential to drive positive change in Ghana and beyond.

INTRODUCTION

In the current system utilized in the storage and access of health data, there is the challenge of limited data reach and such data can only be accessed at the health facility one accessed regularly. It has less details relevant in emergency situations, whiles every healthcare facility also has its own data storage system. There is no integrated system for patient health details making the efficient and accurate provision of overall national health data a difficulty.  Health data is mostly limited and as such making clinical and policy decisions based on such details is always a very challenging task since the relevance of data is of low value after some time. This issue also runs into the pharmaceutical production and sales industry.  We need to provide a solution!

1.   MOTIVATION FOR SOLVING PROBLEM

Considering that a prompt Identification of patients is necessary to give timely care, we recognize its need in hospitals in saving lives. Looking at our geographical area, this is lacking making it a challenge we want address. we are looking to develop a system that aids to be faster and accurate in patient identification than what is currently available and to relief the workload on health personnel. The relevancy of medical data plays a major role since it is used in drug and medical trials, vaccines and research.

2.   BACKGROUND AND RELATED WORK

Given the important role of proper patient identification and medicines safety, it is important that systems are established in African countries to enable the collection of proper and timely health records of patients with an adequate report on all medication safety issues, including errors for appropriate regulatory action, to protect public health and safety.

Governments need reliable evidence based on population health data to develop a public health policy that responds to the needs of the people in their country.

3.   APPROACH AND UNIQUENESS APPROACH

This innovation was developed using the design thinking approach which places the patient at the center of the solution development.

The biometric Health Identification System is an invention with both a hardware aspect and the software database system. This system is meant to make health data accessible wide across the country and the African sub-region. This will utilize the verification system and the software system with an integrated AI data analytic system making our innovation more up to task.

This data will be available in real time and will provide relevant health information of all patients especially in emergency cases and that of patients with speech disabilities. This will aid in making timely public health decisions with focus on specific areas and their needs.

4.   RESULTS AND CONTRIBUTIONS

1. Computer Science Contributions:

  • Biometric Authentication Technology : The integration of biometric authentication technology.
  • Database Management and Security :The software component of the system involves database management for the storage and retrieval of health data.
  • Usability and Accessibility Considerations : Designing the system to be accessible for individuals with disabilities, such as those with speech disabilities.

2. Health Sector Contributions:

  • Enhanced access to relevant health information of patients quickly, even those with speech disabilities.
  • Better Public Health Planning and Management through availability of aggregated health data can by identifying health trends, disease outbreaks, and areas with specific health needs.
